Volunteer Opportunities

The Women’s Shelter of Central Arkansas provides volunteer opportunities for direct and indirect services. All volunteers participating in direct services are required to complete an eight-hour training, complete an application form, and sign a confidential information form. These requirements have been put in place in order to protect the privacy of our clients and the location of the shelter. Indirect services include assisting with projects away from contact with our clients. These services range from assisting with community educational programs, fundraising events, and special projects. We appreciate our volunteers and hope you will consider giving your time to promote our efforts.

Special Projects

Various opportunities are available for individuals or groups. We welcome volunteers who want to plan and develop a special occasion event such as hosting an Easter egg hunt, making Easter baskets, providing Halloween costumes, assisting with pumpkin carving, or decorating the shelter’s Christmas tree. These are events we all take for granted but for a child living in a shelter these can be lonely occasions.

Youth Projects

The shelter is always needs shelter kits. A shelter kit is a clear plastic shoebox filled with items such as toothpaste, a toothbrush, comb, brush, shampoo, deodorant, etc. Often times our clients leave during the night and do not have the opportunity to pack a suitcase.

Many of our children need school backpacks filled with school supplies. What a great project for a youth group, 4-H club, or girl/boy scout troop.

Pick-up and Delivery

Pick up donation items (furniture, food, clothing), and transport them to the shelter, to our storage, or to a client’s home.

Landscaping and Upkeep

We need someone to assist with mowing the grass at the shelter and work on flowerbeds. What a great project for a gardener. A great group project is to plant spring flowers in one of our flower beds. These special touches make the shelter a nicer place to stay.

Handy Person Renovations

If you can paint, build a cabinet, fix a broken door handle, lay tiles, or are just all-around handy, we can really use you in our continued effort to improve the shelter environment.

Child Care Providers

Supervise children while their parents participate in educational workshops and other important activities. Volunteers play games, read stories, and keep children entertained using resources/materials provided by the program or the volunteers. All volunteers should be at least 16 years old.

Office Assistance and Hotline Response

We can always use an extra pair of hands helping in our off-site office. Opportunities include filing, answering the phone, assist with mailings, assist with community speaking engagements, provide information about the shelter by managing our booth at health fairs, college fairs, etc.

We also need assist answering the domestic abuse hotline. You would provide information to callers, conduct intake assessments, and provide emotional support. Don’t worry, you will receive training prior to placement in this volunteer position.
